Malaysian Female becomes Dean of University of Waterloo's Engineering Faculty

Ladies and gentlemen, be proud as Professor Pearl Lee Sullivan has succeeded Professor Adel Sedra to become the first female dean of Waterloo University Canada's award winning engineering faculty. Born in Petaling Jaya to two civil servants parents, she credited them for working hard to support her education. She also mentioned the national education system as part of her journey to success, specifying mathematics and sciences as its strengths. She graduated with BEng and Masters of Applied Sciences in Technical University of Nova Scotia before receiving her PhD from the University of British Columbia. A composite materials and aircraft structure expert herself, she believes that engineering helps to solve a lot of problems. Proud at being named dean, Professor Pearl Lee Sullivan is confident that the addition of female perspectives in the engineering department will help its growth.

The heavy toll imposed with the opening of EDL

Following the implementation along Eastern Dispersal Link (EPL), motorists using the Johor Causeway between Singapore and Malaysia might have to pay 5 times the original toll price (RM 2.90) . However, what's absurd is that they might be forced to do this even if they are not travelling the entire 8.1 km as the collection of toll would be done inside the Customs, Quarantine and Immigration Complex (CIQ). The EDL was built with the intention to reduce congestion in the city area and is linked directly to the North-South Expressway. The toll would affect around 70,000-10,000 commuters each day (including both Malaysians and Singaporeans). The EDL toll proposed for taxis is RM3.10, buses (RM5.00), light trucks (RM9.30) and heavy vehicles, including trailers, at RM12.40. Motorcyclists would not have to pay. Johor Bahru MP Datuk Shahrir Samad is quite opposed to the idea that the collection process does not benefit those who do not use the EDL for travelling to and fro Singapore. He fears that there would be a lot of oppositions and hopes the Cabinet seriously consider the proposal before implementing it. Stulang assemblyman Mok Chek Hou added that whilst the EDL was built with good intentions, the wrong method of implementation might tarnish the Government's reputation.

Islamic Banking in Malaysia

A PhD Sociology student doing research on Islamic Banking in Malaysia would like to interview Muslim Malaysians who hold accounts with Islamic Banks (in the UK or Malaysia or both).

The aim of the research is to learn more about people's views on Islamic Banks. The interview should take roughly 2 hours and respondents are not expected to divulge confidential information such as bank account details. However, it is necessary for the respondents to produce proof of their use of Islamic Banks e.g. a credit/debit card or bank letter. Respondents won't be paid, but a £5 voucher from amazon plus a tea/coffee and cake will be provided to make up for the inconvenience.

Should you require any more information, please don't hesitate to contact her at m.muscat@lse.ac.uk.

A gentle note: If you wish to publicize your own events here, please email w.m.kwong@lse.ac.uk.

Sekian. Salam 1Malaysia.
