Failing Education System in Malaysia?
Recently, news about illiterate students who have managed to finish their secondary schools has taken the nation by surprise. The bigger question to be asked is how they had managed to get through 11 years of schooling without being detected. One reason given was the “automatic promotion” system in schools. Students with special needs are often overlooked due to their disabilities, eg autism, and dyslexia, having no explicit physical characteristics. Despite their poor understanding of the work, the education system allows them automatic promotion up a form every year. However, educationist and former Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) commissioner Datuk N. Siva Subramaniam believes that over-emphasis on examinations is to be blamed instead. He points out that “In the past, the basic emphasis in school was the 3Rs, now it is on exam results. Anyone can shade the answers in the exam (objective papers where you choose options A, B, C, or D); you don't need to read or write to pass.” Other reasons given are the teachers’ attitude and inadequate resources and facilities in the country.
Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president William Ghani Bina proposes that a “flexible education system” is the answer to this problem. He suggested that we should revert back to the old system: a student can proceed to the next level provided he or she finishes the modules – which gives flexibility to both smarter and not so academically-inclined students. Dr Chia Keng Boon on the other hand proposed that the government strengthens pre-school programmes to ensure all students can start off at “equal footing”. Parents of course, have to play a great role in this problem as well by taking responsibility of their own children and not pushing them to the school only.
