Protest against Rare Earth Refinery in Pahang

There have been rallies in KL and Kuantan to protest against the government's decision to give licensing to Lynas for operating a £146m rare earth plant in Pahang. It was the largest rally so far and could pose consequences for the national elections to the government. Malaysians feared the health and environmental risks posed by potential leaks of radioactive waste. Also, member of Parliament, Fuziah Salleh had stated that Australian company got a 12-year tax break from Malaysia. Given that other countries actually shun the project, the government's decision to do so had stirred quite a ruckus among the general public. Should the government not heed to the public's voices, a larger scaled demonstration might be held in the near future. Himpunan Hijau 2.0 chairman Wong Tack commented that the government had been given a day to meet the demand of the public or planning would begin for a larger protest next month. I quote Wong Tack ,"You change your decision or we change you.”

There had been past experiences about rare earth refinery, for example there was one plant in Perak operated by Mitsubishi Chemical Holdings Corp of Japan. It was closed down in 1992 after protests and claims that it caused birth defects and leukaemia among residents. Lynas defended its plant by promising the public that it has a state-of-the-art pollution controls. "The ore that will be processed in Malaysia comes from a mine in Australia and has very low levels of thorium, Curtis,CEO of Lynas says. “There is absolutely no risk to public health,” he says. However, Dr T. Jayabalan is not reassured by the statement as radiation exposure is cumulative. Lynas planned to begin operations on the radioactive ore from Australia in June. Lynas claimed that the "refinery could meet nearly a third of world demand for rare earths, excluding China. It also may curtail China's stranglehold on the global supply of 17 rare earths essential for making hi-tech goods, including flat-screen TVs, mobile phones, hybrid cars and weapons." However, an International Atomic Energy Agency team had assessed the Lynas project last year. They concluded that the project lacked a long-term waste management programme. Lynas also had not designed a plan to dismantle the plant once it is no longer operating.
